Stefano Borlandi was born in year 1960 in Aviano, Italy. He grows by developing, among the different formative experiences, a free spirit, curious, creative, independent, nurturing a growing interest in social issues, nature, photography. In the years after the high school diploma he decided to follow his passion, focusing on photography, approaching at the world of photojournalism.
He has been a professional photographer since 1986, during the years he mostly developed his work between portraiture and reportage, since 1988 he worked for the Photo Agency GRAZIA NERI. He is member of the National Association of Professional Photographers TAU VISUAL.
Between 1986 and 1990, as an independent photographer, he was sent by the News Magazine PANORAMA published by Mondadori, to follow worldwide tours of the most famous musicians of the international music scene, from Pink Floyd to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Tina Turner, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Michael Jackson and many others.
In the years 1988 and 89 he worked at the Venice International Film Festival to create portraits of the stars of the festival for the Photographic Agency GRAZIA NERI.
Driven by his need to know, see and understand more deeply the world where we lived, Stefano Borlandi in year 1990 decided to work as a photojournalist exclusively devoted to international reports. A firm believer of the value of respect and protection of different ethnic and cultural identities, particularly those of populations that live in tropical rainforests, in 1990 he made a reportage in Papua New Guinea, living in the jungle in close contact with the tribal realities of indigenous peoples, but the onset of the most insidious form of malaria imposed him to return to Italy. Afterwards, from the first Gulf War Desert Storm on, between 1990 and 1998 he made several national and international services, major reports in Iraq, Albania, Somalia, Russia, Former Yugoslavia, distributed by the Photo Agency GRAZIA NERI.
In Iraq, Kurdistan and Somalia he reported military operations working accompanying Italian and U.S. military forces, moving on the territory both with soldiers and independently. In the north of Iraq he came into contact with the Peshmerga, the Kurdish guerrillas of the UPK, documenting the scene of fights with the Iraqis. In Somalia, in the region of Kismayo near the Kenyan border, he was one of the few news photographer to reach the camp of the guerrillas of the SMP, Somali Patriotic Movement, the armed faction of one of the notorious warlords, General Mohamed Siad Hersi Morgan also known as "the butcher of Hargeysa", son in law of the deposed dictator, Siad Barre, succeeding to document the living conditions of the guerrillas and a meeting between the leaders of the rival clans with the General Morgan.
In his works, Stefano Borlandi has always tried to bring out the human side to witness the existential condition common to people involved in the different contexts of social deprivation and violence, trying to capture the essence of that human soul being exposed to situations of deep suffering , insecurity and extreme poverty.
In 1994 he attended to the WORLD PRESS PHOTO, in 1996 he was candidate in the final selection for the appointment of a new photographer of the Photo Agency MAGNUM. Not having achieved this goal, after a period of work in Paris, in 1998 he made the radical life choice of going to live with his partner in an old farm in the mountains in the Dolomites, where he currently lives and works. Since then he has no longer photographed for the media, but today, despite the recent epochal changes in this job and the radical changes in the publishing market, he has new projects as an independent photographer.
In 2009 he participated with some photographs of the 90s to the PREMIO FOTOGRAFICO, premium for creative quality in professional photography, where he obtained the Honorable Mention in Excellence of specific projects.
